While a single ILF Neurofeedback session can have positive effects, it is not likely to last. For sustained effects you can expect anywhere between 20-30 sessions, sometimes more depending on the issues being addressed. Intensives may help kick start this, for example with daily sessions for a week or two, but it is recommended to have 1-2 sessions a week for sustained effect. (you may see in the literature neurofeedback referred to as brain training)

An assessment takes up to 2 hours, which includes an initial neurofeedback session of about 5-10 minutes.

A standard Neurofeedback appointment lasts 30 - 45 minutes, with the neurofeedback session lasting anywhere between 5-30 minutes. The length of the neurofeedback session increases over time as your brain gets accustomed to the nuerofeedback.

An assessment is a 1.5-2 hour appointment where we discuss your medical history and lifestyle, explore the areas of improvement you want to target, confirm the aims and desired outcomes for the neurofeedback, assess the best placements for the sensors and introduce you to the neurofeedback with a 5-10 minute neurofeedback session.

Expect to fill out forms in preparation for the assessment, these will consist of lifestyle questions (asking questions for example about sleep and work habits), mental health questionnaire and symptom tracker list to gauge your baseline states.

With neurofeedback it doesn't make sense to talk in terms of side effects, rather how your brain responds to the neurofeedback will either produce more or less of the symptoms. In the initial stages, we are searching for your optimal brain response, you may notice changes in experiences. For example you may have a more restless night sleep, we then know we need to adjust the feedback setting. The effects last around 24-48 hours. In order for sustained effect one needs to have several sessions. In this sense any adverse effects will be short lived, as we will rectify them by the next session. Once we have found the optimal feedback setting you will start feeling the rewards of the neurofeedback.

Four sensors are placed on your head during an ILF Nurofeedback session. They are picking up signals from your brain, similar to a stethoscope picking up your heartbeats, these signals are then shown back (fedback) to your brain via screen that you watch. For anyone who has used biofeedback tech, it will be the same, you get readings of your temperature, heat rate, sleep quality, and then you can 'do' something to adjust if needed. In the case of neurofeedback, you are getting readings on your brain patterns which allows your brain to adjust them in order to allow for better functioning.

No. The sensors do not cause pain. Nothing is being 'done to you'. Think of it as having your pulse measured, instead of your ears being told about the results of your pulse, your brain is being 'told' about its activity through visual display and sounds, in the form of rythmns found on the screen you are watching. For you it will feel very passive, and often very relaxing.

You do not need a formal diagnosis to receive neurofeedback. You will see in the literature that ILF Neurofeedback helps with ADHD, Autism, depression, anxiety, pain, eating disorders and PTSD amongst others. Diagnosis are meant for medical professionals such as psychiatrists and doctors, who prescribe medication. Diagoses help them understand which cluster of symptoms they are 'dealing with' to better navigate what medications to prescribe. With neurofeedback we focus on your lived experience, the symptoms that bother or hinder you in your daily life. They don't have to relate to a medical diagnosis. For example you may suffer with headaches and also want to address sugar cravings. You may want to address your irritability and also want to enhance your focus at work. When a nervous system (brain function) is out of whack it can produce a myriad of experiences that hinder your quality of life.

Great! Book a free 15 minute consultation call via the booking link on the main page or drop us an email at admin@thelondonneurofeedbackclinic.com to coordinate a suitable time for the call. We would need to discuss with you whether we think ILF Neurofeedback is the best option for your goals. We do not automatically accept anyone wanting to try it. For example, if you are struggling with an addiction, ILF neurofeedback may not be appropriate at this time. We will advise you when we speak. We look forward to speaking with you.
